From the studio: How the watercolour “The promenade near the cabbage market” arises

The October motif of Hahnemühle’s art calendar 2016 has been contributed by Dr. Sabine Waldmann-Brun. The artwork from the painting contest was submitted under the motto “Nature in the City”. The artist tells us in our series “From the Studio” how her painting was made.

“Technique and paper: Watercolour, Gouache and coloured ink on Mould-made paper Hahnemühle matt, 300gsm. This painting exceptionally was not done in front of a real place, but in the mood to create a cityscape, that is colourful and natural. I often paint outside, but here I just wanted to be the architect. I started with the forms of the houses, sky and green parts and then added more and more details. I let the paintbrush dance and added colour here and there and splashed a bit to get the little spots. Finally I added the trees, forming the twigs by blowing into a straw in direction of the wet colour. And finally I painted the white lines.

By the way: I started my painting, while I was standing, because the movements are more relaxed and flowing naturally and then I sat down to add the details.”

This year, our calendar painting competition revolved around the colour red. An open theme, determined only by this primary colour. We asked you to take a journey and experience the power of what this colour can incite. “Work in a figurative way or create abstract works of art. Express yourself with the most powerful of all colours, extensively or as an accent in your artwork!” stated our call for entries. Over 900 artists from 38 countries have responded to this appeal by submitting more than 2,000 images. Many thanks to all participants!

From all submissions, 36 fantastic artworks made it onto our shortlist. These artworks were presented in a video.

The twelve winning artworks are now revealed. They can be seen in the gallery on our website. Click here. Congratulations to all winners!

Fans and participants of our annual competition already know: the Hahnemühle calendar is not for sale. You can win one in our upcoming Christmas raffles here on the blog, in our newsletter, on Facebook and on Instagram. Keep your eyes open for announcements so you have the chance to enjoy one of the limited art calendars soon!

Hahnemühle´s annual painting competition is open. Blazingly fast or deliberately slow – set the scene in motion. For the next Hahnemühle art calendar, we are interested in anything that is ‘in action’, anything that shows movement, either in a definitive or abstract way. Leaves in the wind, rolling vehicles, dancing people or animals on the go. Comics and graphics are just as welcome as traditional paintings and drawings.

Become part of the Hahnemühle Art Calendar 2020 with your subject and win – in addition – a creative package amounting to €350. The only condition is that your picture must be created on a Hahnemühle or Lana paper. The choice of paper and painting styles is almost inexhaustible. We are looking forward to submissions from all over the world.

Let your creativity take over your mind and body. Be inspired by the pictures of Jens Hübner and Josilix . The video of Mädchenkunst also tunes you to the topic.

Submit up to 5 artworks in our Upload Portal.

The entry deadline: 30th June, 2019.

We are pleased to team up with Schmincke artist paints and da Vinci artist brushes. Their products are included beside Hahnemühle papers in the exclusive creative package for the 12 victorious artists of our painting competition.
